How to transfer a Domain Name

Transferring most domain names requires two key steps before a transfer can take place:

  1. Unlock the Domain name
  2. Request the Authorization Code (EPP Code)
  3. Remove Whois/Privacy Protection

If you fail to unlock a domain name or provide the authorization code your transfer will fail.

Registrar specific directions:

Transferring from GoDaddy

The domain transfer process is fairly straight forward, with the first step being to login to your account. Once logged in our goal is to complete the pre-transfer steps.

We want to unlock the domain name first:

  • Click on the Domain Manager link in the left hand list.
  • Click on the domain name you wish to manage.
  • Click on the Manage link next to "Locked".
  • Uncheck the Locked domains and click OK.
  • In a few moments the domain name will be unlocked.

You should also take a moment while managing the domain name to verify your contact information is correct. It's important you are able to access the email address listed on the contact information, as several emails will be sent to complete the transfer. Please check that Private Registration (WHOIS Protection) is Disabled, if enabled you will not receive the transfer approval emails.

The final step in GoDaddy is to request the Authorization (or EPP) Code. You can do this by clicking Send by Email under the Authorization Code section.

Now that you have the authorization code we can start the transfer in our Client Area. You can read about that process here.

Reducing Downtime

In many cases you can reduce downtime by pointing your domain name to the new nameservers before transferring the domain name. This will avoid any downtime caused by your old registrar no longer handling the DNS for your domain name. The domain transfer process can also take several days to complete during which time you are typically unable to make changes to the domain name.
