Working with Addon Domains

cPanel® allows for the creation of addon domains, which allow for one account to host several websites located in different folders. These are great if you have a few related websites that you wish to manage from one interface.

Note: The use of add-on domains to resell space on our shared servers is strictly prohibited. Reseller & Managed VPS accounts are however permitted to do so.

Creating an Addon Domain

The first step is to login to our Client Area and manage your hosting, or access cPanel® directly. Once you are logged in we need to create the Addon domain.

  1. Click Addon Domains under Domains.
  2. Enter the Domain Name
  3. Change the Document Root if Desired (Advanced)
  4. Set a password
  5. Click Add Domain

Pitfalls

One of the common pitfalls with addon domains is they default to using a folder within the public_html directory. This can introduce several problems, including your primary domain also serving your addon domain's content.

Ex: If your main domain is primary.com and your addon is secondary.com, you can visit http://primary.com/secondary.com and view the content. If you change the default values during creation you would use the folder name from document root instead of the domain. So it could be http://primary.com/secondary, for example.

The solution is to place the addon domain outside of the public_html directory. You can do this by changing your document root before creating the addon. This will also avoid any .htaccess rule conflicts that might occur between the addon domain and primary domain.

Another common pitfall is a lack of waiting. It can take 2-4 hours for the changes to take effect, sometimes longer if you recently visited an address. The change itself is instant, but if there is a domain update a delay is more common.

Deleting an Addon Domain

The first step is to login to our Client Area and manage your hosting, or access cPanel® directly. Once you are logged in we need to find the Addon domain.

  1. Click Addon Domains under Domains.
  2. Locate the Addon domain to be removed
  3. Click Remove
  4. Answer any final questions
